Cozumel: Mesoamerican Barrier Reef

THE MESOAMERICAN BARRIER REEF IN ALL ITS GLORY

The Cozumel reef system is part of the mesoamerican barrier reef , the second largest coral reef system in the world,  that is home to more than 1,000 marine species and renowned for its unparalleled beauty and biodiversity.

On July 19, 1996 Arrecifes de Cozumel was declared a Protected National Marine Park, giving the opportunity to explore its iconic underwater walls.

These majestic formations, adorned with delicate coral gardens and swaying sea fans, provide a dramatic backdrop for encounters with sea turtles, sharks, eagle rays, barracudas and the elusive Cozumel Splendid Toadfish endemic to the reefs of the island.
